action (#reverb10)

Reverb 10 is an annual event and online initiative to reflect on your year and manifest what’s next. Use the end of your year as an opportunity to reflect on what's happened, and to send out reverberations for the year ahead. With Reverb 10 - and the 31 prompts our authors have created for you - you'll have support on your journey.

Prompt: Action. When it comes to aspirations, its not about ideas. It's about making ideas happen. What's your next step?

Author: Scott Belsky

Thanks to some common sense advice from my friend Laura, my brilliant next step is to turn off the TV and get my 11 things to get rid of done.

A few years ago, I went to visit my friend, Jessica, in Berkeley, California. I went the entire week without watching television, so when I arrived home, I thought, what the hell, let’s keep it up. I went a whole month without television. I accomplished a heck of a lot.

I think it’s time to drastically reduce my television consumption and to start taking action.
Look out world!

  1. Admirable, Nat! My issue isn't TV, it's my laptop. I live on this damn thing. It's my tether to the outside world. The cure for which would be actually going out into the outside world. Radical!

I only have two must-see shows: "Mad Men" and "House." "Mad Men" has a short season, and "House" is in reruns until after the first of the year. Hmm. Perhaps I can skip TV until after the first of the year.

Wait. Are DVDs allowed? :o )

  2. Laura had a great suggestion-- they watch TV one night, and then it is off the next night. Maybe you could try that with your laptop?
I am going to reduce the amount of shows that I record, and the ones I do record, I'll save them and try to watch them all in one evening, then I should have many more evenings to get stuff done.

  3. Why do we always have so much stuff to do and get done?? It never ends! Too stressful. I know I could get rid of half of my belongings and still have too much stuff.

  4. YAY! I hope it works out for you. Last night was a no tv night. I hit up Pier 1 to finish getting decorations for the dining room while Jon hung some photos. By 9:30 we had accomplished so much we decided to watch HIMYM.

I'm telling you, people ask me how I get so much done and it's taking a break every other day from tv. I find it helps me prioritize what I want to watch also.

  5. I'm not sure I get more done, but we almost never have the tv on. Generally only for sports -- I'll watch the Bears game if I have time, or some college basketball during the sweet 16. Occasionally a movie (a newer occurrence). That said, I don't feel particularly productive. Frankly, I feel like the time I was most productive was when I was working full time, taking three classes in grad school, and I still got more done socially and otherwise than I ever have before. So there might be something to that whole, "If you want something done, give it to a busy person" saying.
